The awareness of eternity can change everything.
Today and now. In your life and in the life of absolutely every single person you know and don’t know.
Our views and more importantly‚ our awareness of eternity‚ can impact profoundly the way we live today and now.
I know to some people this might sound too mystical but nevertheless it’s true!
Listen to the apostle Paul revealing how this works:
If the dead are not raised‚ “Let us eat and drink‚ for tomorrow we die.” 1 Cor. 15:32
You can add to the list every vice known to mankind (not necessarily in that order):
- Drugs & Alcohol abuse
- Sexual promiscuity & abuse
- Physical abuse and violence
All these are self-destructive and irrational‚ but people in their lost state of mind accept them as NORMAL. The root cause of all this is of course sin but sin now is more than sin‚ it’s now A CULTURE OF SIN. The culture of sin varies in the way it plays itself out in the different countries and people groups in the world. But at the end it’s still the culture of sin.
And then‚ when we try to share the Gospel with people who live in such demonized context‚ we wonder why satan has such a powerful hold on their minds.
It’s because the Gospel doesn’t make sense outside of the context of ETERNITY!
Satan is working hard to trivialize death and normalize evil in the minds of people young and old. So many of the Western movies today have to do with vampires‚ zombies and superheroes. Violent movies are not far behind. The ultimate goal is trivialize death and normalize evil. If Satan can do that‚ he has won. The Gospel stops making sense to people because Jesus came to give it to us in the context of life and death.
Eternity brings the awareness of God as a Creator‚ Redeemer and a Judge.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Ecclesiastis 3:11
You see‚ if people manage to “turn off” their consciousness‚ God’s built-in warning system in every human being‚ then they can go on sinning and immersing themselves in the culture of sin without feeling guilty.
This leads us to ground zero of what it means to be a “pagan”. The apostle Paul describes this condition very eloquently in his epistle to the Ephesians‚ chapter 2:
“In those days you were living apart from Christ. You were excluded from citizenship among the people of Israel‚ and you did not know the covenant promises God had made to them. You lived in this world without God and without hope.” (New Living Translation)
Let’s review this. Unbelievers:
- Live apart from Christ – which means that living in oneness with Christ must be something markedly different‚ a whole new state of being.
- Are excluded from citizenship in Israel – most Christians have no awareness of their citizenship in the Kingdom of God and how this should impact their identity and position in this world.
- Are ignorant of what it means to be covenant with God what are the benefits (promises) that go with that.
- Live in this world without God and without hope – or‚ by following false “gods” and false “hopes”.
So you see‚ eternity does change everything.
If people were to accept the fundamental Biblical premise that their life has a beginning and an end‚ that they are a mortal and a moral being and are held accountable by God on a daily basis‚ as well as for eternity‚ after their physical body dies‚ it would be so much easier to share the Gospel.
If the Gospel solves death – the gravest of all of our problems first‚ (pun intended)‚ wouldn’t we trust it to solves all the lesser ones? Of course!
But when death‚ the ultimate result of the spiritual disease called “sin”‚ is made trivial in the minds of people‚ why should they try to cure the disease?
Instead‚ we are immersed daily in an environment of blatant‚ militant denial of the most fundamental Christian beliefs and teachings‚ with humanists working tirelessly for the full re-paganization of the Western civilization.
So what’s to do?
In the midst of all this‚ we the believers of Jesus‚ have been called the Ekklesia‚ the government of Jesus Christ – personally by Him!
We are his “national assembly”‚ having been seated in a position of authority in Christ‚ far above every principality and power.
We’re called to live daily in light of God’s eternity and to spread this awareness to everyone else.
We’re called to make a difference and to reverse the culture of corruption and decay.
We can do this!
You can do this!
Which leads me to the CHALLENGE QUESTIONS I have for you this month:
- How is the Kingdom of God advancing in your sphere of influence?
- How are you managing to stay faithful and true to Jesus in a culture of denying he ever lived or will ever come back?
- How can I serve you in this time and hour so that together we can reverse the process of corruption?
